Can You Block Users From Searching For A Term And Finding Your Site

Can you block users from searching a term in google (or any of the other search engine) and finding your site in the search results.

Sometimes you can attract unwanted traffic by accidentally optimizing your site for terms without knowing it, for example a recent site came to light because it was getting traffic for “girls in bathrooms” when the site was about an orphanage.

The site owners didnt want that type of traffic coming to there site, so approached google asking if there was a way to stop google from displaying there site for that particular search term, for example there might be a meta tag to prevent google from displaying the site when a particular term is searched.

At the moment google doesn’t have such a command and this is mainly down to the fact that not many people turn down traffic and this type of request is quite rare. There’s no point adding a function that not many people will use as its just another command for google to code into there algorithm and maintain. At some point in the future they might use it but that will only be if there is a high demand for it.

If you have any input or knowledge on this matter then please feel free to add to the article by leaving a comment below. All comment links i.e author name has the dofollow attribute passing weight from our site to yours.

Web Browsers Can See Pages Differently Does That Mean Google Does Aswell

Web Browsers Can See Pages Differently Does That Mean Google Does Aswell

If you have been involved in web design and coding then you’ll probably know already that some browsers read code and displays it differently to others. For example when viewing a webpage in internet explorer 7 it might display differently if you view it in internet explorer 6, mozilla 4 etc etc. Each browser works slightly different when decoding a webpage, over time the browsers should start to use a standard compliance making it easier for us coders.

So because the web browsers see pages differently is that the same with the googlebot?

Well the google bot only looks for actual indexable content and aslong as you haven’t tried any cloaking techniques then google will see you site how it should do. Its only when you start cloaking by showing different content to your users to what you show the googlebot.

So to conclude the googlebot sees every site the same and focuses mainly on the actual text within a webpage.

Why Does Search Engine Position Vary In Webmaster Tools

Why Does Search Engine Position Vary In Webmaster Tools

Most webmasters rely on the google webmaster tools section to find valuable information on there site from the eyes of the google bot. One piece of information which I have noticed isnt 100% accurate is the google search query section which shows you where you are ranked for your search terms.

For example google webmaster tools query section says we are ranked 7th for the term “buy relevant links” when we are actually ranked 2nd. There are a few reasons why this data isn’t accurate and I’ll try and explain why, there is still some benefit to having the search query section which I’ll also explain in some detail.

The search positions in webmaster tools search query section varies because google uses different data from different sources, for example in google.co.uk we are ranked 2nd and in google.com we are ranked 5th. So this alone can give inaccurate information, it would be good when you specify the country in which you are targeting to automatically pull back data from the appropriate data center i.e google.co.uk rather than google.com.

The good thing about this data at the moment is atleast you can see that your seo efforts are paying off and you are actually ranked in google for your terms. If your main search term doesn’t show up in googles search query section then you know that you need to put abit more effort into your search engine optimization.

Hopefully over time google will develope this section abit more and try to make it accurate and relevant to your desired market i.e country.

Do Tag Clouds Harm Your Site

Do Tag Clouds Harm Your Site

Everyone has seen the tag clouds that tend to be on blogs at the bottom somewhere or the sidebar, but are they doing your site any harm.

When they were first released they were for users to navigate to certain topics by using tags to take them to relevant content. Hardly anyone uses tag clouds to navigate a site especially if the site has been thought out with a good nav system. All sites now days should have a good navigation system as one of the goals is took your readers/users on your site for as long as possible.

In my opinion the downside to tag clouds is they only display one words rather than sentences so it looks a bit spammy and similar to keyword stuffing. If you don’t use any blackhat techniques then your tag cloud will appear harmless as google is aware of the tag cloud but if you are already keyword stuffing or trying some other shady techniques then the tag cloud could be the icing on the cake as it were.

So to conlucde a tag cloud is pretty harmless and is nothing to worry about unless you are already using what is considered to be grey/blackhat techniques.

Whats your opinion or experiences in this area, let us know by leaving a comment.

Can Banned Sites On A Shared Hosting Account Harm My Website

Can Banned Sites On A Shared Hosting Account Harm My Website

As and when we come across new experiences or information that we think might be valuable to you in helping your website grow then we will share that information here. Very recently we helped a website owner improve there movie database/site in google and start getting it ranked higher more naturally. A good website with a good reputation can naturally rank higher without the need to link build heavily to that particular page.

We noticed that our client was on a shared hosing account with hostgator and there were around 2,000 sites on this one server, after doing some investigation we noticed that a few of the sites on this shared server were pretty spammy with the odd few banned from google completely. Our client asked if this would harm his website and would it be worth him getting a dedicated server. In the long run a dedicated server is the best but shared hosting is still very good. Google understands that you don’t have control of the sites on a shared server so why should you be penalised for the other sites mistakes, I would worry about having a few banned sites on your server or even spammy/scam sites and google will deal with them individually.

The only time your site might be affected is if all the sites on that server are spammy or banned and your site is the only clean site, for example google will ask itself why would a site be on a server with 1999 banned or spammy sites. This is theonly time google will think about penlasing your site or removing some of its weight.

So to conclude, don’t worry about shared hosting unless the server your on is full of spammy sites, I wold concentrate on other aspects of seo first before worry about shared hosting.

Its Very Important To Link Build Evenly

Its Very Important To Link Build Evenly

Many people understand how important link building is but neglect to notice the small bits which helps make all the difference. People think all they need to do is promote there search terms and there homepage url, well this looks very unnatural and google will pick up on this. Link building is supposed to be a natural process anyway so if google can prove that your link building is unnatural then it will mark your website accordingly in its search results.

A good trick to make your link building appear more natural is to link building each page on your site, for example you would wont to link build to the majority of your blog posts while making the odd exception when it comes to pages like the about us page and the contact us. Even thought the about us page and contact us page isnt that important it is still a good move to build a handful of links to it.

When I’m not blogging I tend to link build and play around with different link building methods and bits of software. I like to test all the new software to see how good it is but here at relevantlinks.eu we build all our links manually without the aid of link building software. When you have been link building for over 7 years you learn the best ways and adapt them to your personal taste. I like high quality links rather than quantity even though for my own sites I do every now and again go for quantity but this is rarely.

When you link build you’ll notice two types of links, ones that produce traffic and ones that help increase search engine position, our link building packages on offer cater for both needs and considering the work is carried out manually the prices are very competitive. Free Tips For Better Search Engine Rankings

Free Tips For Better Search Engine Rankings

High search engine positions boils down to how good your on-site seo techniques are as well as your off-site seo techniques. The methods we’re going to focus on today is the off-site seo techniques which consist of link building, but we’re going to focus on high quality link building so we can jump up googles search results pages.

Link building is just as important as writing high quality content, you need to research the type of site your looking for before hand and then try to obtain a link from that site in one way or another. A common way to get a good quality link is by leaving a comment with a link back to your site, this is only useful if the blog owner uses the do-follow attribute. If the blog is set-up to use no-follow links on the comments section then the link is pretty much useless, it does hold some weight but not enough to waste any time over.

The way that we like to use for our clients is to approach sites that appear for there search terms and see if they are interested in exchanging a link with us in return for a good quality article which they can then publish on there site for there users to read and write about. We often find that by writing content in exchange for a link is much more effective then general link exchanges but does require a bit more effort on your part. This type of link is to be considered as high quality as long as the site itself meets certain criteria.

If you looking for a good quality link building company then take a look around our site and see what we have to offer. Also feel free to take a look around our blog as we tend to share some good quality seo tipes.

How To Write A Video Sitemap

How To Write A Video Sitemap

If you own a website then you probably already know what a sitemap is, well a video sitemap is similar to the sitemap you would have at the moment but just for videos. Video sitemaps help google to find your videos and a small bit of information on what that videos is about. I’ll tell you what you need to add to your video sitemap to help google, once you have created your video sitemap you should submit it through googles webmaster tools section like you would a normal sitemap.

The first thing you should start off with in the video sitemap is the title of the video, for this example I will make a video called “yellow fish”. So my title in the sitemap for this video would be “yellow fish.

The next thing you would add is a description of the video telling google what it is about and mentioning the name of the video, so in my case I would write a description abit like this ” This video is about yellow fish found all round the world and live in fresh water streams”. Bit of a poor description as its not compelling but you can see from my example how I have added the title of the video into the description.

Once you have added the title and description google also wants you to add the url of the video so it knows where the above information relates t0o and the video your trying to get indexed. The play url is the one that will be indexed. Also add a url to your video thumbnail so google can grab it and put it up in the search results.

Finally you should add a url to the location of the video on your server, so this isnt the page displaying your video but the url to it on your server.

Once you have built your sitemap simply login to webmaster tools and submit as normal through, google will then crawl it and use the information as it sees fit. Googles doesn’t have to index every bit of content it finds but videos at the moment are being indexed pretty quickly especially if you have a video sitemap.

If I have missed anything just leave a comment and I’ll add it with credits to yourself.

How Can You Optimize Images For The Search Engines

How Can You Optimize Images For The Search Engines

Images can be important to a websites and some websites its more important than others to get google to understand what the images are about. For example an artist would display a gallery on there site showing there work for potential clients to look through, sometimes you don’t want to add much text to the pages so how would you optimize an image for the search engines?

As you can imagine images are probably the most hardest object for computers and internet robots to understand but as time goes on things will get better, in the meantime I’ll briefly discuss what you can do to help the search engines dsicover roughly what your images are about.

Google have a basic program called google goggles which is in development stages but can work out popular landmarks, for example the Eiffel tower would be an easy landmark for google goggles to understand. I would definitely not rely on this for your images but at least you can see that someone is discovering the right path to go down.

The best way to optimize an image is to use a relevant file name, for example if your picture is about flowers then why not call it flowers.jpg etc. Another way to optimize it is is to add a title tag to the image tag and label that with some relevancy as well as writing a brief meta description which is also relevant to the image. You can also add an alt tag which helps both the user and the search engines, if the image doesn’t load up for the user for whatever reason it will display the alt tag telling them what the image is, the search engines also look for this as a way to work out what an image is about.

The above section told you how you can optimize the actual image itself but you can also take it just a little bit further. The image will obviously be displayed on a page so you could also optimize the pages title as well as meta tags and even if you don’t want to write a visible description for the user you could write a short sentence which would help towards optimizing your image as well as your site.

Another idea might be to add a comment feature so users can write comments about your image and in the process the odd one or two might mention the main terms your trying to optimize it for i.e flowers.

So conclude, you can optimize an image but you have to do it manually until the computer boffs figure out a way of reading images etc.
