Search engine optimization plays a big part and its thought that there are over 200 different factors to take into consideration when optimizing your website. Some factors hold more weight than others and over time you’ll start to learn what factors are more important than others. A year or so ago pagerank held alot of weight and was a big factor but in todays seo world it doesnt play as big a part as it did a year or so ago. Although saying that pagerank does hold a lot of weight compared to other factors which makes it just as important now as back then but with slightly less weight. Aslong as you focus on building good inbound links you’ll get a decent pagerank in no time but remeber to keep your link building ethical and search engine friendly.

I don’t normally check my webmaster tools section that often as we have so many sites but I decided to take a quick look at our link building site and see if there was any errors. I was quite surprised to see that in googles performance section it says that this site loads up in 1.4 seconds and is faster than 82% of sites indexed by google.

I knew the sites performance was good as I spent several days optimizing the site and the server and over time the load speed started to drop slowly. It looks like it has now stabilized at 1.4 seconds which is pretty good considering the widgets and plugins that this site uses. Without the floating widget on the left hand side, the social bookmarking section under each post and the paypal button displayed on every page this site would load up much faster. Also if I took out the google analytics code from the footer the site would load even faster but the analytics part wont make that much of a difference probably 0.2 seconds.

At some point next week I will strip this site back to its bare minimum i.e taking out the un-needed widgets which are there only for the users benefit (well if I’m honest its for our benefit as well). For example if you have a business twitter account then you need to make it as easy as possible for potential subscribers to find it, that’s why we have the floating button on the left hand side. If you own a business then its a good idea to create a twitter account as well as a facebook account as every bit of traffic helps.

Its important to keep up to date with changes going down at google and one way to stay up to date is by bookmarking a few seo news websites and make a point of visiting each one atleast once a week.

Google provide a graph to show you where abouts your sites ranks with the other websites online for load speeds, they have divided the graph into two colors red and green, if your website isn’t in the green section then there’s room for improvement. Google is being very helpful because when you run the speed test it gives you a list of stuff that its noticed and needs improving, if you don’t understand something on the list then just google it as everyone has experienced the same issues.
