Why Does Search Engine Position Vary In Webmaster Tools
Most webmasters rely on the google webmaster tools section to find valuable information on there site from the eyes of the google bot. One piece of information which I have noticed isnt 100% accurate is the google search query section which shows you where you are ranked for your search terms.
For example google webmaster tools query section says we are ranked 7th for the term “buy relevant links” when we are actually ranked 2nd. There are a few reasons why this data isn’t accurate and I’ll try and explain why, there is still some benefit to having the search query section which I’ll also explain in some detail.
The search positions in webmaster tools search query section varies because google uses different data from different sources, for example in google.co.uk we are ranked 2nd and in google.com we are ranked 5th. So this alone can give inaccurate information, it would be good when you specify the country in which you are targeting to automatically pull back data from the appropriate data center i.e google.co.uk rather than google.com.
The good thing about this data at the moment is atleast you can see that your seo efforts are paying off and you are actually ranked in google for your terms. If your main search term doesn’t show up in googles search query section then you know that you need to put abit more effort into your search engine optimization.
Hopefully over time google will develope this section abit more and try to make it accurate and relevant to your desired market i.e country.
