Why Does Search Engine Position Vary In Webmaster Tools

Most webmasters rely on the google webmaster tools section to find valuable information on there site from the eyes of the google bot. One piece of information which I have noticed isnt 100% accurate is the google search query section which shows you where you are ranked for your search terms.

For example google webmaster tools query section says we are ranked 7th for the term “buy relevant links” when we are actually ranked 2nd. There are a few reasons why this data isn’t accurate and I’ll try and explain why, there is still some benefit to having the search query section which I’ll also explain in some detail.

The search positions in webmaster tools search query section varies because google uses different data from different sources, for example in google.co.uk we are ranked 2nd and in google.com we are ranked 5th. So this alone can give inaccurate information, it would be good when you specify the country in which you are targeting to automatically pull back data from the appropriate data center i.e google.co.uk rather than google.com.

The good thing about this data at the moment is atleast you can see that your seo efforts are paying off and you are actually ranked in google for your terms. If your main search term doesn’t show up in googles search query section then you know that you need to put abit more effort into your search engine optimization.

Hopefully over time google will develope this section abit more and try to make it accurate and relevant to your desired market i.e country.

A Quick And Easy Way To Improve Search Engine Position

Some seo methods are easier than others to carry out, I’m going to talk about a quick way to optimize your on-site content even more, whilst increasing your search engine position. This method involves linking pages together across your whole site passing relevance and hidden weight.

For example if you scroll through our articles you’ll see links embedded within the content linking to relevant articles or pages across our site, this not only helps our users navigate to relevant content but also tells the search engines abit more about each page. Most sites usually have just one navigational bar and a handful of links scattered across 100+ pages, this doesn’t really tell google much about that site apart from what it picks up on that page and through the inbound links to that particular page. If you dont have many inbound links then you need to rely on your on-site optimization, this is where internal linking plays a good portion.

The more internal links around your site the easy it is for google to work out what each page is about and then display the most relevant page in the search results. Small things like this can often make a difference, the a more search engine friendly way of promoting keyterms about your site. A blackhat way of doing this would be to stuff your links in your footer so they display on every page but its always best to stay whitehat and follow googles guidelines.

Are Brand Names Given More Weight In Google

There’s another great seo myth that I would like to try and clear up abit, this particular myth revolves around brand names and how they rank in google. The question that I’m going to answer is “are brand names given more weight in google?” the simple answer to this question is no.

Google doesn’t have a list of brand names and then go out and assign extra weight to there terms boosting there website up the search results pages. The thing about high street brands is everyone knows about them and refer to them using there brand name rather than there website url, so the users are naturally building a brand online which then gives them more weight.

Any website can be branded and when I mean branded I mean the brand name/reputation between you and google. For example my site is relevantlinks.eu and when I talk about my site on other sites I call it by its brand name i.e relevant links, this helps google to assign a brand to your website.

So to conclude google doesn’t give extra weight to brands but will give extra weight to websites that build an online reputation/brand, all offline brands don’t get given extra weight when they build an online website.
