Can you earn weight from anchor text through 301 redirects?
A 301 redirect is where a url permanently redirects to a new url so when a user stumbles across the old one they will be quickly directed to the new page. One of the popular questions in the seo world is will a 301 redirect pass any weight over to the new site, and the answer is yes and no.
More often than not when you redirect a domain name to a new site the weight gets passed across as well but on some occasions it doesn’t. Its down to google weather or not any weight gets passed over, if your redirecting a small number of urls then the chances are you will earn weight but if you have so money 301 redirects that its starting to look a bit spammy then you probably wont receive much weight or none at all. Google has the final say and can see every 301 redirect to your site just like they can see every inbound link to your site.
There was one guy that said that he only builds links from redirecting domains to his main site, if this is the only method of link he uses then its only a matter of time before google pick up on it and investigate. You have to keep in mind that link building is a natural process and if it looks like your building the links yourself then google will penalise your site.
If you want to be around for a long time then you need to just focus on whitehat methods, it can be frustrating to see website that have used blackhat techniques to rank higher than you but its a matter of time before they get penalised. Sometimes with blackhat techniques they will rank highly for several days or even several months but believe me they will drop out. Stick to whitehat methods as that always pays off but does take slightly longer.
