Do Tag Clouds Harm Your Site

Everyone has seen the tag clouds that tend to be on blogs at the bottom somewhere or the sidebar, but are they doing your site any harm.

When they were first released they were for users to navigate to certain topics by using tags to take them to relevant content. Hardly anyone uses tag clouds to navigate a site especially if the site has been thought out with a good nav system. All sites now days should have a good navigation system as one of the goals is took your readers/users on your site for as long as possible.

In my opinion the downside to tag clouds is they only display one words rather than sentences so it looks a bit spammy and similar to keyword stuffing. If you don’t use any blackhat techniques then your tag cloud will appear harmless as google is aware of the tag cloud but if you are already keyword stuffing or trying some other shady techniques then the tag cloud could be the icing on the cake as it were.

So to conlucde a tag cloud is pretty harmless and is nothing to worry about unless you are already using what is considered to be grey/blackhat techniques.

Can Banned Sites On A Shared Hosting Account Harm My Website

As and when we come across new experiences or information that we think might be valuable to you in helping your website grow then we will share that information here. Very recently we helped a website owner improve there movie database/site in google and start getting it ranked higher more naturally. A good website with a good reputation can naturally rank higher without the need to link build heavily to that particular page.

We noticed that our client was on a shared hosing account with hostgator and there were around 2,000 sites on this one server, after doing some investigation we noticed that a few of the sites on this shared server were pretty spammy with the odd few banned from google completely. Our client asked if this would harm his website and would it be worth him getting a dedicated server. In the long run a dedicated server is the best but shared hosting is still very good. Google understands that you don’t have control of the sites on a shared server so why should you be penalised for the other sites mistakes, I would worry about having a few banned sites on your server or even spammy/scam sites and google will deal with them individually.

The only time your site might be affected is if all the sites on that server are spammy or banned and your site is the only clean site, for example google will ask itself why would a site be on a server with 1999 banned or spammy sites. This is theonly time google will think about penlasing your site or removing some of its weight.

So to conclude, don’t worry about shared hosting unless the server your on is full of spammy sites, I wold concentrate on other aspects of seo first before worry about shared hosting.

Its Very Important To Link Build Evenly

Many people understand how important link building is but neglect to notice the small bits which helps make all the difference. Does Anchor Text Pass Through 301 Redirects (Video)

I wrote a post a while back about earning weight through buying expired domains and redirecting them to your site. This video released recently by Matt Cutts also covers the same topic and a couple of other useful points.

The main point of the video is 301 redirects do hold some benefit but you cant rely on them as a sole method for link building.

Today we are going to cover a bit about keywords and how important they are to have or not have in your url. If your thinking about placing keywords in your url then your probably doing it for one purpose and one purpose only and that is to hopefully rank higher in the search engines, this is called search engine optimization.

Search engine optimization is the process of optimizing your website for better search engine positions and the search engines rank your website based on hundreds of different factors. Keywords in your url is just one factor and isn’t by far the most important factor to have or to worry about. For example some people will go out and buy there main keyword in there url, even if this is a factor its not an important one as you can buy any domain name you like and then create a page with the keyword there, this will also be displayed in the url and will also allow you to have a more professional looking domain name.

A couple of factors that you might want to pay more attention to is the quality of content on your site as well as your inbound link structure. content is very important as it gets users coming to your site and writing about it, if you have poor content then the chances are the users want share your link with anyone and post it on there blog or list of favourite sites. You inbound links also play a huge part in seo and this is where you should really focus most of your seo efforts once you have completed the basics etc.

Are Keyword Meta Tags Dead 2010

We’re well into 2010 and people are still talking abut meta tags and what they have done to there site. Incase you didn’t know meta keywords tags are no longer needed for google but do still play a apart in the other search engines. Google uses different factors to determine where a site should rank and what keywords that site uses, it now has no need for meta tags as it has advanced its algorithm making meta tags redundant.

Even though google doesn’t use the keyword meta tag it still uses the description tag and I suggest actually adding both to your website, i.e the meta description for googles purposes and then the meta keyword tag for the other search engines. Even though googles look for your meta description tag it doesn’t mean it will use it, if it can pull a more relevant snippet from your pages content then it will do so but if it finds your description suitable then it will use that.

So to conclude google doesn’t use the meta keyword tag but its still worth using as other search engines still look for it, the tag that you should focus on for google purposes is the meta description as google still looks for it and uses the information it finds.

Here’s a good question ” can you build too many links even if you comply with googles guidelines?” I’ll answer this question here as well as in my e-mail. i thought the question was relevant enough to share here and some of you may find the answer interesting.

I’ll jump straight in by saying that you can never build too many links if you comply with googles guidelines, and when I mean comply with googles guidelines in short I mean make your link building process as natural and as search engine friendly as possible. You can never have full control over your inbound links, for example if you write a really good post or release a really good video then that will cause a buzz and result in other websites linking to you in one way or another. So the amount of links that can point to your site is endless.

The main thing to make sure is that everything you do is 100% search engine friendly as link building can certainly have a negative effect of your site if done by an amateur. Does Pagerank Play A Big Part In SEO

Search engine optimization plays a big part and its thought that there are over 200 different factors to take into consideration when optimizing your website. There’s many different myths floating about at the moment regarding seo techniques and the one that was brought to my attention today was domains registered before 2004 are ranked differently to domains registered after 2004. Now first off this isn’t true, each domain is ranked evenly and fairly it doesn’t matter when it was registered or by who.

When you register a domain you have to build a reputation for it between you and google, once you have established your reputation you’ll notice your site rankings will improve. If you buy a domain today from 2004 it would have already bee registered and have a reputation of some sort, websites can easily pick up a bad reputation so if you do buy an old domain check it out first. Websites that have a bad reputation are more hassle than there worth so stay well away from them.

Personally I suggest buying a domain with your key-term in the url and then focus on building your reputation, there are many factors that go into building a reputation and I’ll cover a couple of them so you can start working on your reputation now.

Google looks at your inbound link structure so you need to focus on building links from quality sites with good pagerank as well as quality sites that are relevant t your niche. You don’t have to focus on relevant links all the time but you should keep in mind quality when doing anything to do with seo.
