Today we are going to cover a bit about keywords and how important they are to have or not have in your url. If your thinking about placing keywords in your url then your probably doing it for one purpose and one purpose only and that is to hopefully rank higher in the search engines, this is called search engine optimization.

Search engine optimization is the process of optimizing your website for better search engine positions and the search engines rank your website based on hundreds of different factors. Keywords in your url is just one factor and isn’t by far the most important factor to have or to worry about. For example some people will go out and buy there main keyword in there url, even if this is a factor its not an important one as you can buy any domain name you like and then create a page with the keyword there, this will also be displayed in the url and will also allow you to have a more professional looking domain name.

A couple of factors that you might want to pay more attention to is the quality of content on your site as well as your inbound link structure. content is very important as it gets users coming to your site and writing about it, if you have poor content then the chances are the users want share your link with anyone and post it on there blog or list of favourite sites. You inbound links also play a huge part in seo and this is where you should really focus most of your seo efforts once you have completed the basics etc.

One of the things to keep in mind is not to get too carried and over optimize your site as it will look unnatural and put some search engines off. There’s another great seo myth that I would like to try and clear up abit, this particular myth revolves around brand names and how they rank in google. The question that I’m going to answer is “are brand names given more weight in google?” the simple answer to this question is no.

Google doesn’t have a list of brand names and then go out and assign extra weight to there terms boosting there website up the search results pages. The thing about high street brands is everyone knows about them and refer to them using there brand name rather than there website url, so the users are naturally building a brand online which then gives them more weight.

Any website can be branded and when I mean branded I mean the brand name/reputation between you and google. For example my site is relevantlinks.eu and when I talk about my site on other sites I call it by its brand name i.e relevant links, this helps google to assign a brand to your website.

So to conclude google doesn’t give extra weight to brands but will give extra weight to websites that build an online reputation/brand, all offline brands don’t get given extra weight when they build an online website.
